불자들은 ‘인류의 역사상 가장 위대한 행사’를

축하 합니다.

1월 26일은 많은 사람들이 생각 하기를 모든 인류의 역사에 있어서 가장 위대한 행사 라고 생각하는 성도 광명일 즉, 스스로의 노력으로 완전한 깨달음을 이루어신 부처님을 위한 날입니다.

석가모니 부처님 께서는 왕의 아들로서 당시 인도의 귀족출신 으로 탄생하신 고타마 싯다르타 였습니다. 그는 오늘날 부처님. 여래 또는 완전한 깨달음을 성취한자로 불리어 지고 있습니다.

이 깨달음은 기원전 544년 보름달이 밝은 어느날에 일어 났는데 현재 불자들이 경외시 하고있는 인도 부다가야의 어느 무화과 나무 아래에서 좌선에 들어 가셨을때의 일입니다.

과연 이행사를 한국인들은 어떻게 축하하며 외국인들은 어떻게 행사에 참여 할수 있는지, 부처님 성도 광명일의 진정한 의미에 대하여 서울 남쪽, 잠실부근에 위치한 불광사의 회주 스님이신 지홍 스님(53세)과 얘기를 해 보았습니다.

지홍스님, 36년간 스님생활을 해오신 이분의 모습은 그저 단순한 회색빛깔의 가사장삼을 입어시고 소나무둥치를 잘라서 만든듯한 차탁(차상)을 사이에 두고 얘기를 하였는데 그의 모습은 조용 하면서도 부드러운 얼굴인상 에다 이따금씩 미소가 흘러 나오는 가운데 나의 질문에 답변을 해주셨습니다.

스님은 통역자 (덕하거사)를 통하여 말씀 하시기를 “모든 중생들은 깨달음을 얻을수 있습니다”. 마치 2천 수백년 전에 석가모니 부처님 께서 그러하셨 듯이 말입니다.

스님은 말씀 하시기를 중생들의 마음은 원래부터 이미 청정자성 하며 한국어로 “불성 또는 자성” 이라고 하는것은 이미 우리들 내부에 존재 하고 있는것입니다. 다만 그것을 보는데 어려움이 있을 따름입니다.

이 우주 삼라만상의 모든 것을 이미 포함 하고 있고 한계가 없으며 삶과 죽음을 초월 하고 있는 이 속성(불성)을 알수 있다는것이 곧 깨달음 입니다. 이것은 또한 상호 연관성을 가지고 있고 모든 것이 하나로 일체화 되어 있다는것을 깨닫는것 이라고도 할수 있습니다.

스님은 계속 말씀 하셨습니다. 석가모니 부처님 께서 완전한 깨달음을 얻으시는 그 과정은 결코 순탄 하지 않았습니다. 왜냐하면 왕의 아들 로서의 화려한 그의 삶은 상당한 고행의 구도과정이 요구 되었던 당시 현실에서 오히려 그리 도움이 되지 못 하였으리라 짐작이 됩니다.

석가모니 부처님께서는 이러한 혼란스런 마음상태를 단연코 조복 받으시고 마침내 “연기법” 즉, 12 연기법(12 Dependent Origination)의 실상을 깨치십니다. 즉 이것이 불교진리의 근본 이자 삼라만상의 일체화를 의미 하는것 이기도 하죠.

스님은 덧붙여 말씀 하시기를, 석가모니 부처님 께서는 좌선 뿐만 아니라 모든 중생들이 당면 하고 있는 근본적인 문제에 대해서 깊은 관조와 선정에 들어 가심 으로서 마침내 깨달음을 얻으신 것이죠.

한국인 불자들은 부처님 성도 광명일을 축하 하기 위하여 그 전날밤에 철야정진을 하는데 참선과 함께 오체투지, 염송등을 하면서 보내며 그 다음날 성도 광명일에는 부처님 깨달음의 의미에 대한 법문을 사찰에서 듣게 됩니다.

영어를 말하는 외국인들이 이날을 축하 하기 위하여 가장 좋은 장소는 화계사에 있는 국제선원입니다. 다음은 화계사 국제선원 보행 스님의 말씀입니다. 보행스님은 국제선원에서 사무총장의 소임을 맡고 계시는데 유럽에서 오셨습니다. 그에 의하면 불교 초발심자 로서 철야정진을 하면서 참선을 하고 오체투지를 하고 염송을 하는것은 아마도 좀 분량이 많지 않을까요 ?

Buddhists to Celebrate ‘Greatest Human Event’

On Jan. 26, Korean Buddhists will celebrate the day Siddhartha Gautama became enlightened and, therefore, known as the Buddha, the enlightened one. On Jan. 26, Korean Buddhists will celebrate what many consider the greatest event in all human history, the day a man achieved full enlightenment by his own efforts.

That man was Siddhartha Gautama, born a high-caste Hindu, the son of a rajah. He is now often referred to as the Buddha, Tathagata or the perfectly enlightened one.

That event took place under a full moon in 544 B.C. as Siddhartha sat under a fig tree in Buddha Gaya in India, a site still revered by Buddhists.

I spoke to Ji-hong Sunim, the 53-year-old head monk of Pulkwang Temple near Chamsil in southern Seoul, about the meaning of this event for Koreans, how they celebrate it and how foreigners can participate.

Ji-hong, who has been a monk for 36 years, dressed in a monk’s simple gray jacket, sat before me on a pine wood that looked a chopping block. His quiet, gentle face broke into an occasional smile as he answered my questions.

He said through an interpreter, Deok-ha, that all people can achieve enlightenment just as the Buddha did more than 2,000 years ago.

He said the human mind is clear already and Buddha nature, or ``chahsong’’ in Korean, is within each of us. We just have difficulty seeing it.

Realizing that nature that contains everything in the cosmos _ without limit, no life, no death _ is enlightenment, he said. It is realizing the interrelatedness or ``oneness’’ of all things.

He explained that it wasn’t easy for the Buddha to achieve enlightenment because his life of luxury as a prince discouraged the discipline he needed to achieve enlightenment.

The Buddha needed to discard his chaotic mental state to find ``yonkibop,’’ the 12 dependent originations, the essence of Buddhist dharma, the oneness of the world, he said.

He achieved this through meditation but also through contemplation of the fundamental questions that all humans face, Ji-hong said.

Koreans celebrate enlightenment with a night of meditation, prostrations and chanting. The following day in the temple they listen to talks on the meaning of enlightenment.

One of the best places for English-speaking foreigners to celebrate enlightenment day is at the International Zen Center at Hwagye Temple.

However, the center’s executive director, Bo Haeng, an English-speaking monk from Europe, said that for beginners a whole night of meditation, prostrations and chanting is probably too much.
